Coping Strategies

Victims will cope in many different ways, some positive and some negative, as they struggle to deal with what has happened. According to the Department of Justice Canada, the common coping strategies of victims include:

Positive

  • Information-seeking
  • Emphasizing the positive side of surviving
  • Engaging in activities to regain control
  • Activism
  • Giving yourself time to heal
  • Seeking support

Negative

  • Avoidance behaviors
  • Denial
  • Dissociation
  • Obsessing about the crime

Ways to Help You to Respond to Trauma

  • Alternate periods of physical exercise with relaxation
  • Structure your time, keep occupied
  • Talk about it
  • Seek support and help from others
  • Maintain as normal a schedule as possible
  • Refrain from making any life changes right now
  • Eat well balanced and regular meals
  • Keep hydrated – drink plenty of water
  • Stay away from drugs and alcohol
